Far North Region: LOYOC’s Journey to Re-educate Children Affected by Conflict and Reintegrating them into Formal Schools Pays-off

Local Youth Corner Cameroon’s journey to Re-educate children affected by conflict and reintegrating them back into formal school is yielding fruits. In 2019 after discovering the increasing number of children who are losing access to education due to violent conflict in the Far North Region of Cameroon, we launched the Salaam initiative. The Salaam initiative is creating safe spaces for re-education and learning, development of life skills and psycho-social support to conflict affected children. (https://ABOUT SALAAM)

From the start, 120 children were identified and enrolled into the Salaam school. After over one year of working with them, we are proud to graduate 20 of these children into formal school with full Scholarship. Amongst them are internally displaced children, orphans, victims of the boko-haram insurgency as well as those from the host community. These children were provided with school materials such as bags, pencils, books, arm boards and uniforms to start their journey in a formal school. It should be noted that all these children are students of the Koranic school who have agreed to carry the Salaam initiative within it. ‘‘I am very happy to be able to return to formal school thanks to all I learned last year from Salaam school. I used to be sad and angry because I lost my parents but now I am willing to learn and be a good boy » Said a graduating pupil.

On Monday October 19, 2020, Local Youth Corner Cameroon officially re-launched the new school year of Salaam School in Mora. A back to school like no other because indeed for the Year 2020/2021 LOYOC will be providing access to quality education and livelihood in an effort to build these children’s hope and give them an alternative to violence. This school year has still been designed for an elementary school for the children to learn French language, learn basic reading and writing skills; provide psycho- social counselling; improve living conditions through the provision of basic necessities.  »Because of corona, we closed early so I am happy to start school again. I promise to learn hard so that next year I will also go to a formal school like my friend » said a little girl.
