Youth Volunteers Mobilized to Foster Civic Engagement and Peacebuilding in Cameroon

In a strategic effort to promote civic participation and social cohesion among young people in Cameroon, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with Local Youth Corner Cameroon (LOYOC), is leading a youth-driven initiative across 13 communes. With support from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education (MINJEC), this project is designed to revitalize local civic platforms and advance peacebuilding efforts.
A Unified Vision for Youth Empowerment
This initiative aligns with Cameroon’s national strategy to involve youth in civic life and peacebuilding. UNFPA, as the lead organization, brings global expertise in youth development and empowerment, while LOYOC contributes its deep local experience in mobilizing and training young leaders.
Together, they aim to create inclusive spaces where young voices are not only heard but actively shape community dynamics. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to nurturing a generation of civic-minded, resilient youth.
Empowering Communities Through Volunteerism
Central to the project is the deployment of over 130 trained youth volunteers across five regions. These volunteers will lead civic engagement activities, facilitate community dialogues, and raise awareness on civic values, leadership, and peacebuilding.
In communes where LOYOC has not previously operated, volunteers will undergo a one-day orientation to prepare them for their roles. The training will cover key topics such as volunteer responsibilities, communication strategies, and conflict sensitivity, ensuring they are equipped to engage effectively with their communities.
Launching Civic Platforms
Public launch events will be held in each targeted commune to formally introduce the volunteers and distribute sensitization materials. These ceremonies will highlight the contributions of local authorities and institutional partners, while increasing visibility through media and social platforms.
By fostering local ownership and strengthening community ties, UNFPA and LOYOC aim to build a foundation for long-term civic engagement.
Sustaining Impact Through Collaboration
Ongoing collaboration with MINJEC and other local stakeholders is essential to the sustainability of the initiative. By integrating youth perspectives into civic frameworks, the project ensures that young people play a central role in shaping their communities.
LOYOC will continue to monitor and evaluate the project’s progress, using feedback from volunteers and community members to refine its approach and maximize impact.
Building a Resilient Future
This UNFPA-led initiative, in partnership with LOYOC, represents a transformative investment in Cameroon’s youth. By equipping young volunteers with the tools to lead, listen, and engage, the project is laying the groundwork for a more peaceful, responsible, and united society.
