Yabassi Gears Up for the 3rd Bilengue Bi Nsan Peace Race

The city of Yabassi is set to host the 3rd edition of the Bilengue Bi Nsan, also known as the Peace Race, in celebration of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) on April 6. Organized by the Association for the Promotion of Social and Cultural Integration and Development of Youth (AIDE Jeunes) in collaboration with the Yabassi Municipality and the Cameroonian Athletics Federation (FCA), this year’s event promises to be a vibrant showcase of sports, culture, and community spirit.

A Celebration of Peace and Unity

Scheduled for April 4 and 5, the Peace Race aims to promote local values of peace and harmonious coexistence through various sporting and cultural activities. This initiative reflects Yabassi’s rich cultural heritage and serves as a platform for youth development amid the challenges of urbanization and social cohesion.

Minister of Sports and Physical Education (MINSEP) will preside over the opening ceremony, emphasizing the importance of sports as a tool for fostering unity and resilience in the community. Yabassi, a cosmopolitan city with a diverse population, has historically been a model of coexistence, making it an ideal location for such a significant event.

Sporting Highlights

The Peace Race will feature multiple categories catering to over 300 athletes, including:

  • Senior Race (10 km): Open to both professional and amateur athletes.
  • Mixed Team Race (10 km): For local junior athletes.
  • Popular Walk (3 km): Aimed at seniors and veterans.

Additional sporting events will include a mixed junior relay race, mountain bike criterium, canoe race, and a giant aerobics session. The races will take place on the streets of Yabassi, with the Municipal Stadium serving as the main hub for activities.

Cultural Extravaganza

In addition to the races, the event will host a variety of socio-cultural activities designed to engage the community, including:

  • A socioeconomic and cultural fair showcasing local businesses.
  • A giant concert featuring local artists.
  • A youth and peace beauty pageant to celebrate young leaders.
  • A peace caravan, which will involve a large solidarity march through the city.
  • Community meal sharing, including a “grand communal soup” to foster togetherness among residents.

Expected Impact

The Bilengue Bi Nsan aims not only to provide a platform for athletic expression but also to raise awareness about crucial social issues, including gender-based violence among youth. By emphasizing the dual role of sport and culture in promoting social cohesion, the event seeks to enhance community ties and support local development initiatives.

With an anticipated attendance of over 10,000 people, the Peace Race will not only highlight athletic talent but also celebrate the spirit of unity and peace that defines Yabassi. As the city prepares for this significant event, it stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, showcasing the power of sport to bring communities together.
