Support and Learning Sessions for Young Women in the North-West and South-West Regions: Empowering Change

We are thrilled to share the latest updates on our initiative, “Support and Learning Sessions for Young Women in the North-West and South-West Regions.” To empower young women as agents of resilience and peacebuilding, the Dallaire Institute and Local Youth Corner Cameroon are organizing a series of 10 support and learning sessions. These sessions aim to provide psychosocial support, enhance knowledge on critical issues, and strengthen peer networks for young women in these regions. Each topic will be covered in both regions, resulting in a total of 10 training sessions; five in the NorthWest and five in the SouthWest.

Recent Session Highlights

We recently hosted a powerful session focused on GBV in conflict contexts, where young women bravely shared their personal experiences. Participants highlighted urgent issues like forced marriages and domestic violence, emphasising the pervasive nature of GBV in their communities. Other forms of violence discussed included human trafficking, online harassment, and verbal abuse.

Throughout the session, we identified several contributing factors to these challenges. Poverty and a lack of awareness often leave women vulnerable, while entrenched cultural and social norms perpetuate cycles of violence. Additionally, issues like drug abuse and peer pressure can further complicate their situations.

To combat these challenges, participants explored various coping mechanisms, such as safety planning, advocacy, and legal assistance. They also learned about the support services available from organisations like MINAS, MINPROF, and various NGOs that can provide vital help.

Following the GBV session, we conducted a second session on “Mental Health and Emotional Well-being.” This session aimed to explore trauma, stress management, and self-care strategies, emphasising the importance of community healing.

Looking Ahead

As we continue our journey, we are excited about the upcoming sessions that will cover three additional topics: “Women’s Leadership and Civic Participation,” “Life Skills for Resilience and Livelihoods,” and “Building Safe and Supportive Communities.” Each of these sessions will provide participants with essential tools and knowledge to foster resilience, enhance their leadership skills, and strengthen social cohesion within their communities.

Desired Outcomes

As we progress, our desired outcomes are clear. We aim to empower young women with the knowledge and skills they need to face their circumstances confidently. We seek to foster resilience by creating a strong sense of community and support among participants, enabling them to share experiences and coping strategies. Increasing awareness of GBV and mental health issues is crucial, as is equipping participants with tools for achieving economic independence.

We are committed to continuing this vital work and look forward to the positive impact these sessions will have on the lives of young women in the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon. Together, we are building a brighter future, one session at a time.
