Bertoua came alive on August 2, 2025, as the 4th Edition of the Na We We Sports Jamboree kicked off with a vibrant opening ceremony that highlighted the power of sports to unite communities. Under the theme “Uniting Through Sports,” the event attracted over 1,500 spectators, including high-profile dignitaries such as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Mr Bengal Zachee Robert, the City Mayor of Bertoua represented by Mr Messe Peng and partners and collaborators such as UN Human Rights, UNFPA, and Source Bonis.
The ceremony featured a series of exciting activities aimed at promoting social cohesion among displaced persons, refugees and their host communities. One of the most anticipated moments was the Solidarity Match, where diverse participants, including representatives from former indomitable lion player, guest influencers and various local officials, played together, symbolizing unity and collaboration.
The atmosphere was electric as the first official female football match took place, showcasing teams advocating against gender-based violence. This match not only provided thrilling entertainment but also sent a strong message about empowerment and equality for young girls.
Community engagement was a key focus of the jamboree, with over 264 young athletes participating in a clean-up campaign that spanned the streets of Bertoua. This initiative encouraged civic responsibility and demonstrated the spirit of teamwork, as participants worked together to improve their environment.
Health was also a priority at the event, with local health professionals conducting comprehensive medical screenings for all athletes. Over 300 individuals benefited from services that included blood pressure checks and eye consultations, ensuring that participants were fit and healthy for the challenges ahead.
The opening ceremony further provided a platform for cultural exchange, featuring an exhibition where local organizations showcased their services. This vibrant display not only highlighted the inclusivity of the event but also fostered connections among displaced persons, refugees, and host community members.
In a reflective moment, the Living Together Camp brought together over 300 youth for peer-to-peer dialogues. Through sharing their experiences, participants engaged in meaningful conversations that cultivated understanding and collaboration.
The Na We We Sports Jamboree is not just a celebration of sports; it is a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity of the community in Bertoua. As the event unfolds, it aims to inspire ongoing engagement and promote lasting social change, proving that through sports, communities can come together to overcome challenges and build a brighter future.
