Cameroon Youths and Stakeholders to Address Gender-Based Violence at Speak Out Training in Minawao Refugee Camp

The X Maleya Association, in collaboration with the Local Youth Corner and with support from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) and UNFPA, is proud to announce a “Speak Out” training initiative aimed at empowering young girls and women in the Minawao refugee camp, located in the Far North Region of Cameroon. This three-day training event is scheduled to take place from October 23 to October 25, 2024. The program focuses on addressing and combating gender-based violence (GBV) in a context where vulnerabilities are heightened.

Event Overview

The training will bring together approximately 100 participants, including 40 women, 30 young girls, and 30 community actors. Participants will engage in interactive sessions designed to raise awareness about GBV, enhance prevention skills, and foster a supportive network for survivors.

Why This Event Matters

Gender-based violence is a pervasive issue in Cameroon, particularly within refugee camps. With reports indicating that up to 70% of women in these settings experience some form of GBV, this training is crucial. Young girls aged 15-24 are especially at risk, making targeted interventions essential. The “Speak Out” training aims to create a safe space for participants to learn, share experiences, and develop strategies to combat GBV.

Participants will engage in discussions designed to:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of GBV and its impacts.
  • Empower young women to prevent, report, and respond effectively to GBV incidents.
  • Strengthen community support networks for survivors.
  • Advocate for gender equality and challenge harmful cultural norms.

Event Structure

The training will consist of structured activities over three days:

  • Day 1: Focus on educating participants about various forms of GBV, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
  • Day 2: Interactive workshops aimed at skill-building, enabling participants to advocate for themselves and others.
  • Day 3: Community engagement sessions involving local leaders and stakeholders to discuss collective actions against GBV.

Methodologies

The training will utilize a variety of engaging formats to ensure active participation, including:

  • Plenary Sessions: Presentations by experts from UNFPA and other organizations.
  • Workshops: Hands-on activities to develop practical skills for addressing GBV.
  • Peer Learning: Opportunities for participants to share personal experiences and best practices.

Join Us in Empowering Women and Young Girls

The “Speak Out” training represents a significant step forward in the fight against gender-based violence in the Minawao refugee camp. It provides an essential platform for young girls and women to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for advocacy and community engagement.

We invite all stakeholders and community members to support this initiative as we work collectively to create a safer, more equitable environment for all individuals in the Far North Region of Cameroon. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by GBV and foster a culture of respect and empowerment.
