The Youth of Buea Say No to COVID-19

The initiative dubbed “The Youth of Buea says No to COVID-19’’ is a youth-led campaign that seeks to mobilize young people in Buea to build community resilience through sensitization, countering misinformation, and distribution of preventive kits to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the Buea Urban constituency.
It is an initiative of Local Youth Corner Cameroon in collaboration with the Honorable Member of the National Assembly for the Buea Urban Constituency, Hon. Malomba Esembe, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education,  the Cameroon National Youth Council, and other youth civil society organizations to ensure that Buea Urban is COVID-19 FREE.

The campaign focused on door-to-door sensitization, the donation of over 2,500 hand sanitizers, the donation of protective face masks, and the pasting of sensitization messages. This process was accompanied by voice sensitization messages in pidgin and the mokpe dialect using megaphones and speakers and on community radio stations. The youth volunteers also focused on capturing community perception and views regarding the pandemic in view of developing a road map for further interventions.

The field activities were piloted by conscripts of the National Civic Service Agency for Participation in Development; youth volunteers from the Regional Delegation of Youth Affairs and Civic Education; youth civil society actors under the aegis of the Administrative Authority of Buea, the Honourable Member of the National Assembly for the Buea Urban Constituency and Traditional Rulers of select communities.

The campaign was launched on Wednesday 6th May 2020 with an opening ceremony at the Divisional Office Buea, followed by field activity from Bokoko village, through Molyko to Bokwai and Wonya Emongo and on Thursday Likombe, Bwassa, and other communities in the Buea Urban Constituency.
