The Creative Skills for Peace Inter Prison Essay Competition


Local Youth Corner Cameroon is excited to announce the official launch of the Inter Prison Essay Competition with the theme ‘Peace and I’ which is centred on the role of youths in the peace process. This is a key activity under the Creative Skills for Peace Book Donation and Library Project. The objective of this competition is to build peace and discipline while promoting a writing and reading culture. It is also an opportunity to humanize violent offenders and to give them a chance to become agents of change and ambassadors of peace.
Being the first of its kind, the essay competition will become an annual contest between prisons in Cameroon organized in an effort to harness the energy, creativity and initiation of the inmates as well as to enable them tell their own stories. This activity falls within the framework of the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) which prescribes the reorientation of education and learning so that everyone has the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that empower them to contribute to a sustainable future. In addition, this activity goes to contribute towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 and 16 which prescribes Quality Education and Peace, Justice and strong institutions respectively.
The essay competition will be carried out under two categories;
The Adult category which will involve inmates from 22 years above. The essay topic for this category will be: ‘The change I want to make’. What is the one thing you would like to do or change to make your country more peaceful?
The Juvenile category which will involve inmates who are 21 years old and younger. The essay topic for this category will be:‘What does peace mean to you?’
These will give Young Violent Offenders access to quality education by promoting literacy and harnessing their energy via written creativity.
