Commemorating the second Anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth Peace and Security.
On the 9th of December 2015, the UN adopted the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace and Security. This is a ground-breaking resolution which recognizes that young people play an important and positive role in the maintenance and promotion of international peace and security. Already two years since the Resolution was adopted and as a youth-led peacebuilding organization, Local Youth Corner could not let this date pass by unobserved.
After having been members of the Youth Advocacy Team and contributing to the Amman Decleration which led to the adoption of the Resolution, Local Youth Corner is called to have a special attachment to the Resolution and ensure it is localized and widespread. It is in this light that a conference was held at the EISERVI Hall at Biyem-assi Stade, bringing together representatives from the Ministry of Youth affairs as well as youth civil society actors in the domain of peace building. This conference hosted under the theme “Harnessing the UNSCR 2250 as a tool for Peace Builders.” was aimed at raising awareness on the existence of the resolution and the need for young peace builders to always make reference to the resolution in their work with government officials so as to obtain a better recognition.
In a bid to introduce the participants to the reason behind a commemoration event, a vox pop video was projected with the interviews of students from the Protestant University of Central Africa following a Peace studies course on their knowledge of the Resolution. As expected, just one out of 9 youth were aware of the Resolution and the ratio wasn’t very different among participants.
While seeking to understand the core motivations behind this resolution as well as its objectives, Mr Saji Prelis, Co-Chair of the Inter-Agency Working Group on Youth Peace and Security and Director of children and Youth Division at Search for Common Ground, USA was one of the speakers. He made a very edifying presentation on the centext behind the adoption of the Resolution as well as the objectives it seeks to cover as well as what is expected of the youth. This was followed by a presentation from Mr.Achaleke Christian on the stakes of the Resolution for Youth made through a Skype c all as well. A summary presentation was made on the actions carried out by Local Youth Corner as far as the Resolution is concerned by Miss Mambou Happy Kelly. Among these actions was the participation of Local Youth Corner in the Progress Study Youth, Peace and Security Consultations for West and Central Africa in Cotonou in September 2017.
This meeting was an opportunity for youth activists present to discuss the challenges faced on the field and for the development of suggestions towards improving on the efficiency of their work. At the end of the discussion, it was agreed that youth peace builders were soon going to receive a training on how to harness the Resolution organized by Local Youth Corner. This is the tone under which the participants parted while taking the engagement of becoming ambassadors of the UN Security Council Resolution2250.
